Exploring aging through dance with Margie Gillis

For Margie Gillis, dancing at 71 years old is less about moving and more about yielding.  

“I think at every stage of your career, every stage of your life, there’s things that are strong and there’s things that are weak. Obviously, as you age, everybody’s pretty clear about what doesn’t work. So, the exploration is within what was does work.” 

U of M Symphony Orchestra set to recite 'Poems Without Words' ▶️

A poem without words might seem like something of an oxymoron, but to the artists of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra, it makes all the sense in the world when it comes to their music.  

The orchestra’s first concert of the year is entitled Poèmes sans paroles (Poems Without Words), and it features two students of the Desautels Faculty of Music speaking prominently into the concept in their own unique ways.

The 67th Grammy Awards were handed out last night at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The evening was filled with highlights from across genres, from Beyoncé capturing her first-ever Album of the Year honours for Cowboy Carter, to Canadian superstar The Weeknd ending his Grammys holdout with a live performance. The evening was also dedicated to the city of Los Angeles and its people who are still dealing with the aftermath of last month’s devastating wildfires.  

Exploring 'The Cleverest Fellow', Samuel Coleridge-Taylor at McNally Robinson

Classical music fans in Winnipeg will have the chance to learn about a seminal 20th century composer at the start of Black History Month. McNally Robinson’s Community Classroom is set to host two lectures about the life and music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. 

“2025 is the 150th anniversary of Coleridge-Taylor’s birth, so this is the time to celebrate his achievements,” explains lecturer Larry Strachan, the leader of the Chamber Orchestra Without Borders.

Revamped edition of "The Inside Scoop" showcases where authors are from

The John Howard Society of Manitoba is inviting Winnipeggers to the relaunch of a publication dedicated to sharing the works of incarcerated men and women across Canada. 

The Inside Scoop works with people who have had encounters with the legal system for them to have a creative outlet to share everything from poetry to drawings to recipes.
