Old music in new ways

Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (MCO) oboist Caitlin Broms-Jacobs has always been a fan of early music. 

“When I was in high school, my friends and I would skip down the street singing Renaissance madrigals in four parts,” she says. 

So when the MCO commissioned a new arrangement, Broms-Jacobs was keen to explore some of the repertoire, though reinterpret it for modern wind instruments.

Tuesday, March 8th 2022 is International Women’s Day.

Each year, a theme accompanies the day of action and celebration. This year is all about #BreaktheBias.

The musical world, indeed does have a clear gender bias: it has been dominated by male composers and performers.

Gala concert to close Manitoba Opera 2021/22 season 

Mark Saturday, April 2 on the calendar. 

Manitoba Opera brings their season to a close in a gala concert featuring a quartet of acclaimed Canadian artists:  soprano Andriana Chuchman, mezzo-soprano Catherine Daniel, tenor David Pomeroy, and baritone James Westman.

Accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Tyrone Paterson, the showcase will features favourite selections from the catalogues of Puccini, Verdi, Bizet and Mozart. 

Rei’s return

This weekend, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra welcomes back Rei Hotoda to the Centennial Concert Hall as guest conductor.

Current music director of the Fresno Philharmonic, Hotoda got her professional start in Winnipeg serving as assistant conductor from 2006 to 2009. 

“This orchestra has been really key in so many ways in my development as a young conductor and then moving on to being a music director,” says Hotoda.

Jeweller, Indigenous art curator among GG winners

Fredericton jeweller Brigitte Clavette and Toronto-based Indigenous art curator and writer Gerald McMaster are among nine winners of the Governor General's Awards in visual media and fine arts.

The Canadian Council for the Arts says Clavette won the Saidye Bronfman Award, which is given to an exceptional fine craft artist. The Canadian Museum of History, as is tradition, will acquire one of her pieces. 

Clavette was lauded for work that "is especially innovative and memorable" while "advocating for others to succeed."

And the 2022 Classical and Jazz Nominees are....

On May 15th , 2022 the Juno Awards will take place at the Budweiser Outdoor Stage in Toronto. This particular Juno Awards ceremony will be extra exciting, because, it is tentatively scheduled to be an in-person event. This will be the  first live-in-person ceremony in three years, since the beginning of the pandemic.

Classicaland Jazz Nominees, represent artists from  coast to coast to coast, and showcase the wide diversity of the Jazz and Classical scene here in Canda. So without further ado…here are the Jazz and Classical nominees for this year’s Juno celebrations…

Hold on to your card! Some organizations to continue with vaccine requirements

As provincial health orders in Manitoba do away with vaccine requirements for entry into public places as of today, some venues are choosing to continue checking vaccination status.

Among organizations that will still be checking vaccination cards at the door are the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and True North Sports & Entertainment for entry into events at Canada Life Centre and the Burton Cummings Theatre.
