More focus being put on genetic evaluation in beef and dairy cattle

The Canadian Angus Association will receive over $1.6 million to improve genetic evaluation tools for Canadian beef and dairy cattle.

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced the funding on Friday noting that Canada's world-class cattle industry contributes significantly to our country's economy. 

"By investing in new innovations and technologies, we can enhance the industry's economic and environmental sustainability -  putting more money in the pockets of producers, and more top-quality Canadian products on tables around the world."

Saskatchewan crops face weather woes as seeding nears completion

Despite a rain delay throughout the province, seeding progress has greatly advanced over the past week, according to the latest crop report from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. Seeding is now 94 per cent complete, up from 77 per cent last week. This is behind the five-year and ten-year average.

The southeast and southwest are the furthest advanced, sitting at 96 per cent complete. This is compared to 84 per cent last week and is the same as the five- to ten-year average.

Gas prices plummet on the prairies

Saskatchewan has recently been seeing a significant drop in oil and gas prices and could continue to.

According to GasBuddy, this is due to lower demand for gasoline and a recent decision made by OPEC.

The current Saskatchewan average is around $1.54 per litre while the national average is sitting around $1.60 per litre and wholesale costs have seen a dramatic drop.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, highlights that gas prices are around five cents lower than they were at this time last year.

Saskatchewan targets illegal dump sites during Environment Week

As part of Canadian Environment Week, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has launched an educational campaign to reduce illegal dump sites across the province.

"Illegal dumping remains a significant challenge—one that threatens public health, damages the environment, and harms our communities," said Environment Minister Christine Tell. "We hope this campaign encourages communities to protect natural spaces, reduce clean-up costs, and send a clear message that we value our environment."

Strike for Canadian border workers on hold until Wednesday: union

The union that represents 9,000 CBSA workers said Friday they won't strike until at least Wednesday, as mediation continues.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada initially said border workers were set to strike as early as 4 p.m. Friday if the two sides hadn't reached a deal.

But shortly after 4 p.m., a spokesperson for the union said negotiations would continue.

The spokesperson said later Friday that a new strike deadline would be set in the coming days and job action was still possible if an agreement couldn't be reached at the table.

The Humboldt Broncos have announced that 2005-born forward Kye Benoche has committed to the team for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

Benoche,a Campbell River, BC product split last season with the BCHL's Coquitlam Express and NCDC's New Jersey Rockets. 

After spending 18 games with Coquitlam, he had 22 points (8G-14A) in 23 games in New Jersey. He also added 4 goals in 3 playoff games.
