New pieces of history highlights Carlton Trail College's 50th anniversary celebrations

The 50th anniversary was a special one for Carlton Trail College.   

Last week, the year-long festivities ended with the unveiling of a pair of new additions, a mural, and a metal structure from two artists that will help create a unique impression for years to come.  

The mural called “Empowerment Ring” was designed by Kayla Hanson. Meanwhile, the metal structure was created by Murray Cook, a long-time welding instructor. A time capsule was also incorporated into the metal structure.   

Suspect herbicide-resistant kochia? Here’s what to do

Another common cause is herbicide resistance. In the case of kochia, herbicide resistance is a safe assumption as many kochia populations have stacked resistance to multiple groups.

Successful startup season for Humboldt Minor Basketball Association

The inaugural season of the Humboldt Minor Basketball Association (HMBA) saw its spring run through with much success. Over 100 young hoopsters got involved in the grades one through six program, which opened the door for new opportunities and, most certainly, a second season.

Freeland says committee finding that some MPs aided foreign interference 'concerning'

Canada's deputy prime minister says the finding that some Canadian members of Parliament were "wittingly" helping foreign state actors is "concerning," but she trusts that law enforcement will do its job. 

Chrystia Freeland's comments come after a committee of MPs and senators released a report Monday that said intelligence shows foreign actors worked to foster relationships with parliamentarians. 

WESK finds new rural ambassador in Watson business owner

WESK (Women Entrepreneurs Saskatchewan) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing business advisory services, along with start-up financing options, mentoring and networking and learning and training opportunities for women pursuing businesses. The organization recently announced a Rural Ambassador program thanks to $450,000 of federal funding through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan). 

Another side by side vehicle theft has local RCMP on the hunt

Humboldt Lanigan RCMP are on the hunt for thieves who have stolen another UTV or side by side vehicle in the area.

Sometime between June 2nd and 3rd, 2024, a red Polaris Ranger 900 UTV or “side by side” was stolen from a farm yard in the RM of Usborne. The matter is still under investigation by the Humboldt and Lanigan RCMP detachments.

Art in the Barn a beautifully rustic experience

Art in the Barn is an exhibition and sale that happens each spring just east of Humboldt at Dixon on the Ford Family Farm. Darlene Ford, an artist and patron, hosts the weekend event in an incredible restored historic barn loft. The gorgeous original wooden structure adds the perfect rustic ambience for the varied works crafted by local and provincial artists.

Prairie cattle marketing highlights

Saskatchewan's average feeder steer and heifer prices were unavailable from Canfax in all weight categories last week due to a lack of sufficient data, as cattle are moving back out to pasture.  

The Saskatchewan weekly cattle marketing report is taking a summer break and will return with weekly updates with the fall run.

Manitoba feeder steer prices ranged from an average of $290 per cwt for the 900 + weight category to a high of $441.33  per cwt for the 401 to 500 pound category

Canola Watch identifies insect issues of concern

The latest Canola Watch newsletter reminds producers to monitor fields regularly for insect and disease issues.

There have been increasing reports of cutworm feeding activity, with some canola reseeding in parts of the Prairies.

If farmers see significant numbers or activity, they are asked to send the cutworm species identification to the Prairie Pest Monitoring Network in their location. 

Flea beetles are another insect that should be on the radar for canola producers.

CATTLElytics founder recognized


The Canadian Women Entrepreneur in Industry Gala held its awards last week.

The CEO and Founder of CATTLEytics Shari Van de Pol was recognised with the "Total Mom Inc.'s Tech for Good Award" for Advancing the Dairy Industry and the Welfare of its Animals.

According to the company website, the CATTLEytics Dairy Health and Management System is the control centre for a dairy operation.
