Strong turnout at Humboldt Municipal Candidates Forum

Over 100 people gathered in the Humboldt Legion Hall, with another several hundred viewing online, to see and hear the candidates for the upcoming Humboldt municipal election. Three mayoral candidates and nine of the ten council hopefuls took to the stage for a Q&A style forum sponsored by the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce. 

Federal government announces massive drop in immigration targets as Liberals make major pivot

The federal government is slashing immigration targets to levels that will flatten population growth as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admits the government did not get the balance right after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government had targeted bringing in 500,000 new permanent residents in both 2025 and 2026.

Next year's target will instead be 395,000 new permanent residents, and that will fall to 380,000 in 2026 and 365,000 in 2027.

Investigation continues into fatal collision on Highway #6 near Regina

Southey RCMP are investigating a fatal collision involving two vehicles that occurred on Highway #6 10 kms north of Regina on Wednesday night around 6:30 pm.

The driver of one of the vehicles was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. He has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Piapot First Nation. 

An adult male passenger was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening,

The adult male driver of the other vehicle was transported to hospital with serious injuries. 

Highway #6 was closed for the investigation. 

Trudeau says he will remain prime minister despite caucus revolt

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has no intention of stepping down as the leader of the Liberal party by next week. 

A letter signed by two dozen Liberal MPs asking Trudeau to step down was presented to the prime minister Wednesday at a tense caucus meeting in Ottawa.

The letter asked for him to let the caucus know by Oct. 28 what he decides to do.

Trudeau told MPs he would reflect on what was said, but when asked today if he would stay on as prime minister after that date he answered a definitive "yes." 

Relatively calm weather turning from October to November

Turning the corner into the end of October, from a weather standpoint almost anything can happen. High school football and soccer teams could be playing in the snow dash Halloween costume kids could turn from fuzzy Ewoks into yetis by the end of their foraging. 

This October however, things look promising for a seasonal to mild turn with relatively little risk of precipitation heading toward November, according to environment and climate change Canada.

RCMP have cancelled the dangerous persons alert.

Two of the suspects were arrested in Tobin Lake.

There may be two additional outstanding suspects on foot in the Tobin Lake. 

As a part of the investigation, RCMP have decided the matter no longer fits the criteria of a dangerous persons alert. 

Residents in the Tobin Lake area may notice a continued increased police presence.

Highway #123 north of Tobin Lake has been blocked off due to a police presence and ongoing search. The public is asked to avoid the area. 

SWF cautions drivers to Give Wildlife a Brake!

A drive down just about any roadway in the area near twilight will confirm that area wildlife is on the move and that drivers need to exercise additional caution. 

As in past years, the fall season comes with reports of moose sightings on Hwy. 368, Highway 5 near Muenster, Hwy. 20 near Burr, along with other hot spots. Deer are once again plentiful this season and can be seen amassing at roadsides.

Karen Siermachesky wants to create collaboration with residents as city councillor candidate

A resident of Humboldt for more than 60 years, Karen Siermachesky has put her name forward as a candidate for city councillor in this year’s municipal election.  

Siermachesky possesses an extensive career healthcare. After she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1984, she spent over 38 years as registered nurse beginning in the medical ward at the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
