Community Foundation halfway through giving challenge

This week, the Community Foundation for Portage and District (CFPD) invites Portage la Prairie residents to make a difference that will last for generations.

Until November 17, CFPD’s Giving Challenge Week will stretch donations further, turning every $5 gift into $7, thanks to contributions from The Winnipeg Foundation and the Manitoba government. 

Kim Lavallee, Executive Director of CFPD, says Giving Challenge Week is one of the most rewarding times of the year.

Prince George to Portage: Mujcin and Cousins excited for where Terriers can go

Decker Mujcin has made the trip from Prince George, British Columbia to Portage la Prairie at least twice, as he joined the Terriers for his second year in the city. His buddy Scott Cousins made the trip to Portage for the first time, and the duo is enjoying getting a chance to play for a team leading the way in the league.

Cousins and Mujcin are childhood friends who met when Mujcin moved from Yellowknife to Prince George when he was around the age of ten. Mujcin shared what brought him back to Portage for another season.

MWF Town Halls spark dialogue on moose license cuts, Premier Kinew vows to listen to hunters

Manitoba's Premier is aware and understands there are concerns from the province's hunting community right now. Wab Kinew made the comment in light of the recent series of Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) town hall meetings focused on ensuring fair and sustainable access to wildlife resources. 

The meetings came on the heels of the province's decision earlier this year to reduce the number of moose draw licenses by 75 per cent in four of Manitoba's game hunting areas, something the MWF felt was done without the full engagement of licensed hunters.

Canada Post workers go on strike Friday morning, disrupting deliveries

Canada Post workers are on strike after failing to reach a negotiated agreement with their employer.

Canadian Union of Postal Workers says approximately 55,000 workers are striking, claiming little progress has been made in the bargaining process.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued a 72-hour strike notice earlier in the week, saying it's been asking for fair wages, safer working conditions and other improvements over nearly a year of bargaining.

RCMP rolls out body-worn cameras for officers nationally

The RCMP is rolling out body-worn cameras for officers, deploying more than 10,000 cameras across the country in the next 12 to 18 months.

Officers will be expected to turn on their cameras when they answer calls or interact with the public. They will wear the cameras on their chests and they will flash red lights to indicate they are recording.

"The muscle memory that we're training officers to build in is essentially seatbelt off, camera on," said Taunya Goguen, the RCMP’s corporate management officer, at a press briefing Thursday.

Portage Terriers domination leads to CJHL nods

The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) is starting to become a believer in the Portage Terriers.

The CJHL lists the top 20 teams throughout all of the junior leagues under their umbrella, including the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL). This week, the Terriers are ranked 17th. This is the first time this season the squad has made the top 20.

Protein Industries Canada partnering for improvement of plant-based cheese

Earlier this year, Protein Industries Canada announced a project and partnership with agriculture companies to help improve plant-based products including cheese. Partnering with Daiya Foods, Ingredion, Ingredion Plant Based Specialties (IPBPS) and Lovingly Made Flour Mills; the goal is to use Canadian grown crops such as peas and faba beans to help improve the taste, texture, and overall quality of plant-based cheese.
