Talks to resume in B.C. port dispute in bid to end multi-day lockout
Contract negotiations resume today in Vancouver in a labour dispute that has paralyzed container cargo shipping at British Columbia's ports since Monday.
The BC Maritime Employers Association and International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 514 are scheduled to meet for the next three days in mediated talks to try to break a deadlock in negotiations.
The union, which represents more than 700 longshore supervisors at ports, including Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Nanaimo, has been without a contract since March last year.
The Royal Canadian Legion turns to Amazon for annual poppy campaign boost
The Royal Canadian Legion says a new partnership with e-commerce giant Amazon is helping boost its veterans' fund, and will hopefully expand its donor base in the digital world.
Since the Oct. 25 launch of its Amazon.ca storefront, the legion says it has received nearly 10,000 orders for poppies.
Online shoppers can order lapel poppies on Amazon in exchange for donations or buy items such as "We Remember" lawn signs, Remembrance Day pins and other accessories, with all proceeds going to the legion's Poppy Trust Fund for Canadian veterans and their families.

Doc Walker stepping up to host Manitoba Country Music Awards
The Manitoba Country Music Awards are just around the corner, and this year, local legends Doc Walker are not only taking the stage but hosting the whole event. Chris Thorsteinson, half of the award-winning country duo, shared his excitement about the big night and what fans can expect from the festivities at Winnipeg’s Club Regent Casino Event Centre on Sunday, November 12.
“There's a lot of great artists, it is going to be a fun night. We're also hosting a few songwriting panels and music industry panels and Friday and Saturday at different places around Winnipeg.”
Couple arrested following theft from business in Portage
Portage la Prairie RCMP were able to take illegal drugs off the street in what started as a robbery call.
According to an RCMP Weekly Report, on October 29, Portage RCMP received a call from a business regarding a theft in the 700 block of Saskatchewan Avenue East. When police arrived, the two had already fled the scene.
RCMP were able to locate the suspects a short distance from away, leading to the arrest of both suspects.

Magnitude 5.3 quake hits northern Yukon, no damage reported
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has struck in northern Yukon, but Natural Resources Canada says there have been no reports of damage and none would be expected.
The quake struck about 167 kilometres north of Keno, Yukon, and 519 kilometres from Whitehorse, just after noon Pacific Time at a depth of 27 kilometres.
Natural Resources Canada had initially reported a magnitude of 5.8 for the quake, and says tremors were felt in Keno, which has a population of about 20 people.
Portage city manager to depart in January 2025
After seven years, Portage la Prairie is in the market for a new city manager.
Nathan Peto will be leaving on January 27, 2025, to pursue a new professional opportunity. Peto looks back on pivotal moments throughout his time in the role, including the ice storm in 2019, and the many infrastructure projects, most recently the Saskatchewan Avenue restoration project.

Riding Mountain MP calls for change at Parks Canada over 'negligent' repsonse
The recent talks with the federal environment committee regarding Jasper National Park and the massive fire this summer. Dan Mazier, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa, says that what has come out of the hearing regarding the fire has him very concerned about the lack of communication from Parks Canada.
With issues this summer coming to light over zebra mussels in Riding Mountain National Park, Mazier says the government still doesn't seem to have answers to how the issue started.
