Josephine Sindani’s first memory of using a food bank is a happy one.
She was eight years old and still adjusting to the shock of an Ottawa winter after recently moving from Halifax, where she and her mom arrived in Canada from Sudan about two years earlier. One day she saw her pregnant mother approaching their home, trudging through snow and carrying a “big bag of toys.”
Saskatchewan Party wins fifth straight majority government, Scott Moe back as premier
Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party won a fifth consecutive majority government Monday, losing in the big cities but retaining its iron grip on rural areas to secure victory.
Moe’s party was shut out by Carla Beck’s NDP in Regina and lost all but two seats in Saskatoon.
But it found enough support everywhere else to be elected in 35 seats in the 61-seat legislature, compared with 26 for the NDP.
"Thank you once again, Saskatchewan for placing your trust in our party, the Saskatchewan Party," Moe said as supporters in Shellbrook clapped and whooped.
Bloc Québécois set to begin talks to topple Liberal government after deadline passes
The Bloc Québécois is poised to begin talks with other parties to bring down the minority Liberal government, which has not met its deadline to pass two key bills.
Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet set the deadline last month, putting the Liberals on notice that to avoid an election "before Christmas" they must adopt a pair of private member's bills.
One of the Bloc bills aimed at safeguarding supply management in trade negotiations has the support of the government and is being studied by the Senate.

"Business Walks" initiative aims to bring further insight into Portage's economic landscape
Portage la Prairie business owners can expect some inquisitive visitors this week. Teams of representatives from economic agencies across the Portage region will engage directly with local businesses in a series of "Business Walks" from October 29 to November 1, 2024. Eve O’Leary, Director of Economic Development at Portage Regional Economic Development (PRED), says the initiative is designed to gather firsthand insights from businesses in Portage la Prairie, enabling leaders to better support the business community and address key challenges.
Jets win streak ends with loss to the Leafs
The Winnipeg Jets season-opening win streak came to an end Monday night at Canada Life Centre.
John Tavares scored three times in the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4 victory over Winnipeg.
William Nylander, Matthew Knies and Morgan Rielly also scored for the Leafs who jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Kyle Connor sparked the Jets comeback with back-to-back second period power play goals.
Tavares' second of night with 2:07 left in the middle frame extended Toronto's lead to 5-3.
PC Party of Manitoba names leadership candidates
Two men are vying for the position of Leader of the PC Party of Manitoba.
The Leadership Election Committee has confirmed that Obby Khan and Wally Daudrich have met the requirements to stand in the upcoming Progressive Party of Manitoba leadership race.
The two candidates will participate in a Q and A session hosted by former Radisson MLA James Teitsma on Wednesday of this week, at the Delta Hotel.
Khan and Daudrich will discuss their vision for the party and our province and answer questions from the audience.
Manitoba pays tribute to first response team for exemplary service in Carberry tragedy
Premier Wab Kinew presented the heroes from the first response team for their work at the Carberry Tragedy last year with the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt.
With Kinew, was Honourable Lisa Naylor, the Minister for Transportation and Infrastructure, Honourable Ron Kostyshyn, Minister for Agriculture, Mr. David Pankratz, the Special Envoy for Military Affairs, and MLA Jodie Byram, the member for Agassiz and the Carberry area.
UPDATE: Portage la Prairie RCMP find missing woman
Hayley Labelle has been safely located.
Former story:The Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a missing 20-year-old woman on October 27.
Hayley Labelle was last seen at a convenience store on Saskatchewan Avenue East on October 23.
She is being described as having a medium build, approximately 5’2” tall, 125 lbs. with long brown hair and green eyes. No clothing description was provided.
City of Portage la Prairie glad to see support from province regarding infrastructure
The Provincial Government of Manitoba is extending an olive branch for municipalities like Portage la Prairie regarding infrastructure costs.
The program is called Manitoba Growth, Renewal and Opportunities for Municipalities, or Manitoba GRO. Rural Municipalities will be able to apply for up to 50 per cent of eligible costs by way of grant funding. A total of $42 million has been invested by the Provincial Government.
