Masi named FCM's Chair of Election Readiness Group, hoping to bring municipal needs to forefront

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has put a Portage la Prairie city councillor into a role that will help steer federally elected officials the right way, regarding issues that municipalities face.

Joe Masi was appointed the Chair of Election Readiness Group by FCM President Geoff Stewart. The group's focus will be to look at strategies, issues, and tactics surrounding the next federal election, to ensure that municipalities are not thrown to the side.

Masi explains the different issues that he hopes will be addressed on the campaign trail.

Police looking for thief after business robbed in Portage

A break and enter occurred in Portage la Prairie at a business in the 1800 block of Saskatchewan Avenue East in Portage la Prairie. 

Police say the suspect entered the property by cutting through a fence to enter the property and then proceeded to enter the business through a window. He was able to make off with a couple of items before police arrived. 

Warriors in Recovery assisting addicts in our community

With the issue of drugs, alcohol and addiction being prominent parts of conversation in the Portage la Prairie area, a local group is getting out there to help those in the fight with these problems.

Jonathan Pashe is a co-founder of the organization Warriors in Recovery, which holds various sober events around the area, and he shares what they are hoping to accomplish through their efforts.

A decade of donations: Brake for Breakfast hits new heights with new record set

The 10th anniversary of "Brake for Breakfast" was a massive success, with the Portage la Prairie community showing incredible generosity on a beautiful fall day. This annual event, which supports breakfast programs for all schools in the Portage Division, saw a surge in donations.

Five years since the unforgettable 2019 Thanksgiving snowstorm

Five years ago, Thanksgiving in the area was anything but normal. That was when a Thanksgiving snowstorm rocked Portage la Prairie and surrounding areas.

The storm was one for the ages on October 11, 2019. It knocked out trees and hydro lines, leaving many without power. 48,000 people were reported to be without power across the province. Locally, Manitoba Hydro said that all seven power sources to Portage were out. Some, just outside of the community, were without power for more than 10 days.
