Portage La Prairie Library prepares for spooktacular Trick-or-Treat event

The Portage La Prairie Regional Library is gearing up for its much-anticipated annual trick-or-treat event on October 26, running from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The library's Community Program Coordinator, Leah O'Leary, says that this year's event will feature twelve different local organizations, including long-time sponsor Co-op.

Families can expect a fun filled atmosphere, as the event has attracted nearly 1,000 children in previous years. 

"It's going to be very busy and very loud for those three hours," O'Leary laughed.

Terriers look to get back in the win column against Winnipeg Freeze

A rocky start to the season has the Portage Terriers 2-4-0-0 so far, but a game tonight against the Winnipeg Freeze could get them closer to evening up their record.

The Freeze have yet to record a win this season, however, the Freeze have faced the MJHL-leading Selkirk Steelers twice, along with a single matchup against the Steinbach Pistons and the Niverville Nighthawks.

Portage comes into the game with two wins in their last five games, coming against the Dauphin Kings on the road, and at home against the Neepawa Titans in a shootout.

Fire Prevention Week igniting awareness in Portage la Prairie

This year’s Fire Prevention Week, from October 6 to 12, comes with an essential message for Portage la Prairie residents: “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” The Portage Fire Department is leading the charge to ensure every home in the community is better protected by working smoke alarms.

Brad Bailey, the Fire Chief and Director of Public Safety for the City of Portage la Prairie, shared his excitement about the week. 

Strike postponed, health care workers reach tentative deal

A planned strike that would have impacted 25,000 healthcare support staff in Southern Manitoba has been postponed.

Bargaining teams from MGEU and CUPE reached a tentative deal at 4:25 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to CUPE, they will arrange information sessions over the next few days, leading to a vote on the tentative agreement.

Both CUPE and MGEU are reportedly recommending acceptance of the tentative agreement.

Who will end the debate? Political gridlock continues in the House of Commons

Federal political parties appear to be locked in a game of chicken in an increasingly precarious Parliament over a debate that has stalled almost all business in the House of Commons.

The Conservatives have vowed the debate will continue until the Liberals hand over unredacted documents to the RCMP about a green-tech foundation that was found to have misspent government money.

The debate has now stretched into its second week.

Federal ministers were told of increasing 'volume and complexity' of foreign threats

A newly released document shows federal cabinet ministers were warned in May 2022 that hostile states were targeting Canada's strategic interests, the integrity of Canadian institutions and democratic processes, and the ability of the public to exercise Charter-protected rights and freedoms.

The document is a summary of one of four memorandums to cabinet, generally considered closely held confidences, that were provided to a federal commission of inquiry into foreign interference as part of its terms of reference.
