Manitoba Canola Growers release 2024 variety trial results
Farmers across Manitoba and the prairies can now access the results of the 2024 Canola Variety Evaluation Trials, a critical resource for making informed seed selection decisions. Spearheaded by the Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA), this program marks the first year of province-specific program following the discontinuation of the Prairie-wide Canola Performance Trials in 2022.
Boys Central Plains Capitals return to Manitoba U18 action
For the first time since 2020, the Portage la Prairie region has a Triple-AAA U18 hockey team. The Central Plains Capitals have been getting their legs under them to start the season with an entire roster of players who have never played U-18 hockey.
Travis Foster, a Male Director with the Central Plains Minor Hockey Board, says it's nice to have the team back.
Portage to celebrate new holiday tradition with Vopni Park lighting event
The Holiday Avenue Project in Portage la Prairie is introducing what they hope will become a new Christmas tradition for the community. Secretary Heather Graham says the initiative involves lighting up Vopni Park on the downtown Avenue with festive decorations. The organization raised significant funds for the project and has plans for the official lighting event.
Southport Aerospace welcomes Nathan Peto as new Chief Executive Officer
Portage la Prairie City Manager Nathan Peto is changing roles but staying local. He’s stepping into the CEO position at Southport Aerospace. Peto has been closely involved with Southport during his time with the City, thanks to their strong working relationship.

UPDATE: Shortage of licensed staffing forces Portage Veterinary Hospital to close
After 22 years of serving the Portage la Prairie community, the Portage Veterinary Hospital is closing its doors this Friday. The final day of operation was announced Tuesday of this week.
Dr. Tammy Dunbar, who ran the clinic, passed away, and due to circumstances beyond the family’s control, there’s no one able to take over the clinic.
Brent Dunbar, speaking on behalf of the family, explains that it wasn’t for lack of trying that the clinic is shutting down. The family shars a statement explaining their situation.
MP Branden Leslie reacts to US Election
Two weeks ago, the United States wrapped up their presidential election, with Donald Trump winning his second terms as president.
Branden Leslie, the Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, gave his reaction to the news during a recent break in Parliament for Remembrance Day, offering his congratulations to the president-elect.
He notes, however, the news wasn't exactly a joyous occasion for Canadians.
First winter storm watch of the season issued
Portage la Prairie and area had its first tase of winter over the weekend with some light snow falling in the region. It turns out that was just the appetizer as Mother Nature may be serving up the main course on Tuesday and Wednesday with 5-15cms of wet snow falling across parts of the region.

Parliament on the road to an unprecedented confidence crisis, but there are off-ramps
If no political party is willing to say uncle, the drawn-out stalemate in the House of Commons is heading for an unprecedented situation that could amount to a tacit lack of confidence in the government, without anyone in Parliament casting a vote.
The Conservatives and Bloc Québécois have already announced plans to try to bring down the government and trigger an election with a non-confidence motion at the next opportunity. But there's no telling when that opportunity will come, because the House has been gridlocked in a filibuster for more than a month.
