A man now living in Portage la Prairie has personally witnessed the effects of the Canadian government's new policy changes on foreign workers. After arriving in Vancouver in 2022, Sanjeet Grewal studied for almost two months before returning to India due to his mother’s ill health. He stayed in India for about three months and, upon returning, arrived in Winnipeg.

Terriers stumble in preseason opener

The Portage Terriers annually open their preseason with a game specifically for players who have not seen the ice in the MJHL before, and had their all-rookie game on September 10.

The first goal is often a sign of how the game will go. However, that was not the case in the Terriers' first preseason game of the year.

Jack Perrier scored the game's opening goal on a nice pass from Tristan Gravenor. The pass came through the slot and he and tapped home a goal through the legs of the Virden netminder.

FCM signs new Community Building Fund, will bring up to $800,000 to Portage annually

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has signed a deal with the federal and provincial governments to bring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the City for various projects.

The FCM has confirmed the new Community Building Fund, formerly known as the Gas Tax Program, will give municipalities, like the City of Portage la Prairie, funding over the next five years. Portage City Councillor and FCM board member Joe Masi says we've already used this funding in previous years to help with the causeway project.

Country 93.1 celebrates ten years on the air

Guardians of the Galaxy was #1 at the box office, Billboard's #1 country song was Jason Aldean's Burnin' It Down, Barack Obama was President of the U.S, Stephen Harper was Prime Minister of Canada, the iPhone 6 was just announced, and Country 93.1 FM had just launched on September 10, 2014.

On Tuesday, Country 93 blew the candles out on its tenth birthday, commemorating a decade on the airwaves in Portage la Prairie.

Historic St. Anne's church completes major renovations after 165 years

St. Anne's Poplar Point is one of the, if not the only, heritage buildings and churches of its era still operating as a church. Member Monica Griffiths says they just finished major renovations this past week, and for a short time, you could see the original timbers used for the walls as they were exposed during the renovation. The church was built around 1850.

Jamor Farms hopeful for better yields compared to previous years

Harvest season is here and as crops go from the fields to the bins, Jamor Farms is expecting a better year than the previous few.

Jamor Farms is located just north of Portage la Prairie, and they farm wheat, canola, soybeans, and other edible beans. Scott Moorhouse, who works with the farm, says they just wrapped up their wheat collection and have recently moved on to beans.

He notes their dry summer was still an improvement to years past.

Goldeyes' Watkins named Manager of the Year

First-year Winnipeg Goldeyes skipper Logan Watkins was named American Association Manager the Year Tuesday after piloting the club to a 56-43 record and first place in the West Division.
 
The Goldeyes, who finished in last place in 2023, secured the 21st playoff appearance in franchise history under Watkins, and ended the season with a winning record for the 25th time in 31 seasons.

Terriers kick off preseason at Stride Place

The Portage Terriers are ready kick off their season of action with a matchup against the Virden Oil Capitals.

The Dogs and Oil Caps have met in the preseason 6 times in the last three years, with Portage owning a record of 1-5 (W-L) in that stretch. However, significant departures from the Oil Capitals over the summer have members of the Terriers camp feeling positive about their chances to get the season off on the right foot with a win.
