Health care aide training coming to Treherne in 2026

High school students and adult learners in the Central Plains region will soon have a new opportunity to start a career in health care. Red River College Polytechnic is launching its Health Care Aide program in Treherne beginning January 26, 2026.

The six-month program will offer 25 seats and is open to both mature students and Grade 12 students through a dual credit option, allowing high schoolers to graduate with both their diploma and Health Care Aide certificate.

B.C. pilot charged with hijacking and terrorism over Vancouver flight

A man charged with hijacking a light plane at Victoria International Airport and flying it to Vancouver had an "ideological motive to disrupt airspace" and seized control of the aircraft after threatening a flight instructor, RCMP said Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada said a charge of hijacking had been filed in Richmond, B.C., constituting a "terrorist activity" and a "terrorist offence" under two sections of the Criminal Code.

RCMP said Shaheer Cassim, 39, is set to appear in court next Tuesday.

Some Manitobans appear willing to pay higher electricity rates and shift their energy use to nighttime, an opinion poll commissioned by Crown-owned Manitoba Hydro suggests.

The findings come as the utility is asking the provincial regulator to approve rate increases in each of three next three years in order to replace aging infrastructure, avoid an increase in power outages and bring new generating power online.

Unionized Canada Post workers to vote on deal starting July 21

Unionized Canada Post workers will get a chance to vote directly on the employer's offers for a new collective agreement starting on Monday.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board will run the vote between July 21 and Aug. 1.

A simple majority vote will decide whether the proposal is accepted or rejected.

Canada Post is at an impasse with the union representing roughly 55,000 postal service workers after 19 months of talks.

SAS cadet legacy unearthed in Portage archives

No charges in 2022 officer-involved shooting near Portage la Prairie

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has wrapped up its review of a 2022 police-involved shooting on the Trans-Canada Highway near Portage la Prairie, concluding no charges will be laid.

The incident happened around 3:49 a.m. on June 15, 2022. RCMP officers were responding to a call about suspects in a truck allegedly breaking into a business. When police caught up to the suspect’s vehicle, it reportedly rammed a police cruiser and pinned it against a trailer.

RCMP investigating theft of 25-foot windmill in RM of Grey

Manitoba RCMP are asking the public for help after a large windmill was reported stolen from a property in the Rural Municipality of Grey earlier this month.

According to Carman RCMP, the theft was reported on the morning of July 7, around 9:00 a.m. Investigators believe the windmill was taken sometime between July 4 and July 6.

The stolen structure is described as silver in colour, standing approximately 25 feet tall with a six-foot blade. Given its considerable size, police say it's likely someone in the area may have witnessed suspicious activity.
