Remembering Ken King: A legacy of kindness and community

“He was just a great guy.” 

That is the sentiment shared by many upon hearing the news of Ken King’s passing last week.  

Ken, who was known for being the owner of King’s Department store until recently, passed away on Friday, December 6th. Since then a number of people in the southeast, including Carlyle, (where King’s is located) have shared their thoughts on the legacy that Ken will leave behind.  

Local agrologist shares planting advice and soil secrets

Sherri Roberts, a professional agrologist, gave a few tips for people looking to do some planting during the May long weekend.

“The key thing you have to remember with gardening is the spring frost dates,” she said. “Normally for this part of the province, May 15th is about when the last spring frost comes.” 

UPDATE: Weyburn General Hospital reopens following evacuation

Services at the Weyburn General Hospital resumed Saturday afternoon following an evacuation on Friday.

The evacuation came down at roughly 11:30 a.m. after a suspected gas leak. People in the hospital noted a strong smell and began to feel dizzy and nauseous. After the evacuation was complete, it was determined that it was not a gas leak but a patient who came in contaminated with a crude oil substance. You can read more on the evacuation here.

Breaking: Saskatchewan Teachers to hold single-day strike next week

After months of back and forth between the Saskatchewan Teacher's Federation (STF) and the Provincial Government, the countdown to a teacher's strike has begun. In a press release made by the STF on Thursday morning, it was announced that a one-day general strike will take place across the province on Tuesday, January 16th. By law, it is required to provide a minimum 48 hours' notice before staging a walkout, but the STF opted for a 5-day warning to allow parents and caregivers more time to arrange for childcare.

Weyburn player becomes first female league MVP of MJ minor football league

While girls in football are nothing new in Weyburn, one girl recently became the "first and only female" to be awarded MVP in the Kinsmen Moose Jaw Minor Football league.

Weyburn's Ella Schenher, who plays running back for the Weyburn Falcons, was announced as this year's U14 Offensive MVP last week. 

According to the announcement, Schenher "does it all. She plays quarterback, she plays running back, she plays receiver, she kicks, she punts...I'm not sure there is anything she can't do."
