Two killed in rock slide at Banff National Park

Two people are dead following a rock slide in Banff National Park, RCMP have confirmed.

The first victim, a 70-year-old woman from Calgary, was found at the scene Thursday.

A second body was recovered this morning, according to a joint statement from RCMP and Parks Canada.

Three other hikers injured in the incident were airlifted to hospital and have since been upgraded to stable condition.

Seven Cochrane Water Ninjas selected for Team Canada

Seven athletes from the Cochrane Water Ninjas—five team members and two alternates—have been selected to represent Canada at the 2025 Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Swansea, Wales, July 10 to 13.

Jack Dunse and Isaac Thibodeau have been named to the men’s open national team. Oliver Johnson and Caebri Smith will compete on the men’s development team, while Danica Fisher joins the women’s development team. Rylee Bashow and Corbin Gilbert have been selected as alternates.

Cochrane lifts fire restrictions as rain moves in

The Town of Cochrane has lifted all fire restrictions as of 9 a.m. today.

Fire officials say weather conditions have improved enough to remove the restrictions, which were put in place during drier conditions.

A rainfall warning is in effect for Cochrane and west Rocky View County, with 40 to 80 millimetres of rain expected by Saturday evening.

Panthers victory leads to Cochrane man winning $1,000!

The CochraneNow Cup, powered by Cochrane Nissan, has officially been awarded for the first time. 

Tom drafted the Florida Panthers at the start of the NHL Playoffs, and beat out 15 other Cochranites to lift the Cup and collect a cool $1,000.

“I just want to to say that my heart was with the Oilers, but my wallet was with the Panthers.” laughs Tom.

Cheer camp brings spirit and stunts to Cochrane

A rainfall warning is in effect for Rocky View County near Cochrane, with heavy rain expected to bring between 40 and 80 millimetres by Saturday evening.

Scattered showers today are forecast to develop into more intense rainfall tonight, continuing through much of Saturday before easing by the evening.

Environment Canada is warning that heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding and water pooling on roads. Low-lying areas may also be at risk of localized flooding.

Cochrane’s Ty Mueller helps push Abbotsford towards Calder Cup

The Abbotsford Canucks are on the brink of making franchise history.

They defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 on Thursday night to take a 3-1 lead in the American Hockey League (AHL) championship series. With the win, the Canucks are now one victory away from claiming their first-ever Calder Cup.

Jonathan Lekkerimaki led the offence with two goals. Centre Ty Mueller of Cochrane assisted on both, including the eventual winner. Arshdeep Bains added another goal, while goaltender Arturs Silovs stopped 32 shots to secure the win.

Matechuk earns dual gold in prestigious reFocus black & white contest

Acclaimed Cochrane photographer Jacquie Matechuk has earned top honours in the 2025 Black & White Photo Contest held by reFocus Awards.

The contest drew entries from 80 countries, showcasing the timeless appeal of black and white photography. Matechuk stood out among a talented global field, taking gold in two categories: Architecture for her photo Symphony of Strings and Wildlife for The Watchman.

Rage look to rebound and gain ground in late RMLL playoff push

The Rocky View Rage Jr. B T2 lacrosse team settled the score with the Spurs last weekend and aspires to do the same against the Axemen tonight in RMLL action.

The Rage are coming off a key 13-7 win over the Foothills Spur and will be aiming to carry that momentum into tonight's home matchup at Totem One.
