Council candidate Dave Hildebrand wants to make Morden great again

Dave Hildebrand is one of seven City of Morden Candidates running in the December 20th election, hoping to fill one of two empty councilor seats. 

He was born in Morden.  

"I went to school there, spent grade 5, 6 and 7 in Northern BC, Northern Alberta, Central Alberta. When we came home to Morden, it was home and I want to emphasize "home." My father broke farmland South of Morden behind a horse and a single plow, sod buster. Mother shoveled gravel into wagons for our first dam, back in the 30s." 

His farming background made an impact on his life.

The first session of the 43rd Manitoba Government opened this week with the first Speech from the Throne from Manitoba's new Premier Wab Kinew and his NDP government. The speech was delivered by Lt. Governor the Honourable Anita Neville.  

Also new to the role as MLA for Morden-Winkler, Carrie Hiebert attended her first throne speech as a sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).  

Manitoba Farm Women's Conference keynote speaker encourages crowd to promote farming more than defend 

Over one hundred and fifty women from across Manitoba registered for the Manitoba Farm Women's Conference (MFWC) held in Winkler November 21st, 22nd, 23rd. Three days were set aside to "Educate, Encourage and Empower" farming women. There were tours of local agricultural spaces, plenty of learning opportunities ranging from mental health and getting organized to succession and building a healthy credit history along with time to network, to interact and to put on the cowboy boots to line dance.

Morden Fire & Rescue called to three vehicle fire on an early, cold morning 

Morden Fire & Rescue crews were called out to a vehicle fire early Thursday morning. 

Fire Chief Andy Thiessen tells the story.  

"We got the call about 1:30 in the morning. Police noticed the car fire in the compound. We responded, and of course, there were three vehicles involved. Basically, one vehicle will have started spreading to the other two. No other damage to buildings or anything like that. So, that part was good." 

While the cause of the fire has not been fully determined, it does appear to be electrical, according to Chief Thiessen. 

Morden Mayoral Candidate Nicholas Hoeppner wants to "go big or go home" to get more young people involved

Two people are vying for the position of mayor in Morden's December 20th by-election, former city councilor Nancy Penner and Morden resident Nicholas Hoeppner. 

At 24, Hoeppner has decided to "go big or go home" and run for top spot on city council. 

Increased math requirement aims to build confidence in grade 9 students

Grade nine students at Morden Collegiate Institute (MCI) are spending more time in math class than ever before.

Julie Kalinowski is a grade nine math teacher at MCI and says a full year of math, instead of just one semester, will better prepare kids for math in through the rest of high school.

“The grade nine math curriculum is really pretty rigorous, and this way students are able to spend more time working with it in order to feel more confident as they leave grade nine and head toward grade ten.”

Menzies Medical Centre holds info night to help people navigate the medical system in the Pembina Valley

Morden Menzies Medical Centre held an information night on Wednesday to help over 24,000 users of the community clinic and healthcare system in the region, navigate through abbreviated services due to staffing shortages.

Dr Kevin Earl explained the goal of the night.

Morden's Tracey Krause wants to be a voice for people who are struggling in Morden  

Morden's Tracey Krause is one of the seven candidates running in the Morden by-election, vying for one of the two vacant councilor seats. She moved to Morden 6 years ago, but was raised here, and wants to continue to be a voice for all people in the community.
