A regional approach to climate change motivated by love 

A delegation from Pembina Fellowship Church Climate Group made a presentation to Morden City Council on May 29th. They are hoping to rekindle the MSTW Community Led Emissions Reduction (CLER) Program that ran from 2008-2012. CLER is an action plan that gave guidance and strategic steps to address climate change in the region under the direction of Kelly Stock the CLER Climate Change Coordinator at that time.

A lasting partnership makes a difference for kids in the Pembina Valley 

Tuesday morning, it was all smiles in the Morden Tim Hortons, as staff gathered around Big Brothers Big Sisters Pembina Valley Executive Director Jenelle Neufeld for the presentation of the cheque from sales of Smile Cookie Week in Morden and Winkler May 1-7.  

Neufeld said they smashed their goal.

One hundred red dresses representing a portion of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirited People (MMIGW2S) in Manitoba were displayed in Bethel Heritage Park in Winkler, Saturday, to bring awareness to this part of the ongoing Indigenous history. The travelling exhibit is in the third year of bringing the powerful reality to communities across the Pembina Valley and to honour the lives of each Manitoban who has never made it home.  

Morden council approves new 4 way stop downtown 

Morden Police Chief Brad Neduzak wanted to bring a new traffic stop to the attention of motorists, pedestrians, and people coming to the City of Morden.  

"Traffic, pedestrians, citizens will notice a change along Stephen Street, the Morden City Council has decided to take a step in trying to make Stephen St. a little bit safer with the amount of traffic and pedestrians at certain intersections. There is now a new four-way stop at 7th and Stephen St. in Morden." 

He explained the rationale behind the decision. 

Swan Lake Elder David Scott gives feedback to EMMS students on Land Acknowledgement project 

École Morden Middle School students are reflecting on their work to create their own land acknowledgements as part of Indigenous Education taking place at the school this week. Students had the opportunity to share their final class project with Swan Lake First Nation (SLFN) Traditional Elder and Spiritual Leader David Scott, who listened to each class, gave feedback, answered questions, and shared stories with them. 

Mrs Bethany Loewen's grade seven class put this land acknowledgement together and presented it to Elder Scott Tuesday morning. 

"A golden moment" describes Morden's first in person Canadian Citizenship Ceremony since the pandemic 

Friday May 19, forty people from thirteen different countries gave their Oath of Citizenship affirming their allegiance to King Charles at the Morden Access Event Centre.  

Morden Immigration Coordinator Shelly Voth said the City of Morden signed up as soon as they heard in person ceremonies were resuming for the first time since they were moved online during the pandemic. A team from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) put on the ceremony and Morden provided the venue, decorations and snacks. 

Tabor Home Board project designed to give a good quality of life to residents by connecting with others 

The Morden Tabor Home (MTH) Board is fundraising for an Accessibility Path which will be 8 feet wide and around a kilometer long. The Tabor Home Board is working with southern Health, who owns the land, to create this space which will require culverts, retaining walls, fencing and rails for safety.  

Board Chair Helena Goertz explained. 

Western School Division requests another new school and daycare in 5-Year Capital Plan

Western School Division has submitted its 5-Year Capital Plan to the Provincial Government for consideration. With Morden's active immigration program and people choosing to move to the city, growth prompted some larger requests.

Superintendent Stephen Ross predicted; growth is not expected to slow down.
