Green Party leader finds positives in election loss

The Leader of the Green Party of Manitoba says last week Tuesday was still a positive day, even though the party failed to make history in our province. 

No Green Party candidate has ever won a seat in the Manitoba Legislature. That streak continued in the latest general election.

Janine Gibson, who lives south of Steinbach, ran in Wolseley this time around. Gibson finished fourth in the voting, after collecting 544 votes, or 6.29 per cent. NDP candidate Lisa Naylor claimed 6,483 votes, or nearly 75 per cent of all votes. 

Cooler weather looms following one of warmest Septembers on record

Our stretch of unseasonably warm weather is about to change in southern Manitoba. That is according to Sara Hoffman with Environment Canada. 

The normal high for this time of year is 15 degrees Celsius.

"We have a cold front actually swinging through the province today, that's causing some of those thunderstorms," explains Hoffman. "That should usher in some more seasonal temperatures."

In fact, the forecast high for Wednesday is 17 degrees and for Thursday is 13 degrees.

RCMP seize more property stolen from across southern Manitoba

RCMP have made an arrest following the discovery of stolen property from locations across southern Manitoba. 

On Friday, as a result of an ongoing investigation, officers with the Manitoba East District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) unit, along with assistance from the Gimli RCMP Detachment, RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS), executed a search warrant at a property located in the Rural Municipality of Gimli.

More than 100,000 ballots cast already, with advance polls closing Saturday

Manitoba voters have Friday and Saturday left o cast their early ballots in the provincial election. 

Advance voting opened last week Saturday and will run until the end of the day this coming Saturday. According to Elections Manitoba, there were approximately 107,149 ballots cast through the first four days (September 23rd through 26th). 

Manitobans can vote at any advance polling place in the province.

Manitoba's top doctor says COVID-19 and influenza are circulating at low levels right now in our province.
    
Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin says we can expect increased circulation of respiratory viruses as the season moves on. He notes Manitobans can take important steps to help protect themselves, their families and their community. This should include good handwashing, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve and staying home when sick.

Falk returns to Ottawa for resumption of Parliament

The Member of Parliament for Provencher is back to Ottawa this week as the House of Commons resumed sitting on Monday.

Ted Falk says he had the opportunity to attend many community festivals and events this summer and says constituents all have the same concern right now. 

"The cost of living is something that's top of mind for everybody; the price of groceries, the cost of housing, the price of gas, everything," notes Falk. "We can trace it all back to the Liberal's carbon tax and the ever-increasing tax burden that they are putting on Canadians."

Pansy farmers harvesting vegetables for those less fortunate

A retired farming couple from Pansy is now harvesting vegetables grown this year in their community garden. 

Melvin Kachur and his wife Helen say they have a garden that is about two-and-a-half acres in size. This year they grew potatoes, corn, tomatoes, beans, raspberries and strawberries, thanks to some large donations from seed companies and potato growers. The goal is to donate the goods to local food banks at the end of the season.

DSFM will no longer allow cell phones in classrooms beginning next month

Beginning next month, students in Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine (DSFM) schools will no longer be allowed to use cell phones while in the classroom.

Division Superintendent Alain Laberge says they noticed during the pandemic that more and more students had cell phones. Yet, he says these phones were not being used for teaching purposes, but rather as a means of socializing and playing games.
