Providence celebrates the graduating class of 2023
The graduation ceremony at Providence University College and Theological Seminary took place at the Otterburne Campus Saturday afternoon.
Niklaas Schalm, Registrar and chair of the graduation committee says there were 94 students graduating, though not all of them are degree students, some are earning certificates.
He notes, though most of them are Canadian, “we do have 18 students who are international.”

Steinbach Bible College introduces next president
Dave Reimer has been named the next president of Steinbach Bible College.
S.B.C and its Board of Directors announced on January 31st, that Reimer has accepted the new position.
Dave Reimer has been part of the SBC family for the past 20 years. After graduating from college he became a board member and then started teaching at the school.
Stuartburn Reeve frustrated with new date on PR 201 RTAC project
After two-and-a-half years of municipalities lobbying the province to make PR 201 conducive to truck traffic, the Reeve of the RM of Stuartburn is to the point of frustration.
After a recent meeting with Manitoba government officials, Reeve Michelle Gawronsky says, “We were now informed that there's a possibility of 2026-27 when they'll send out the engineers (regarding PR 201) and I'm going, “Not good enough”.
Ted Falk honours Queen's Platinum Jubilee award recipients
It’s been four months since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, yet the celebration of her Platinum Jubilee continues throughout the commonwealth, including in Southern Manitoba.
MP for Provencher, Ted Falk, was given 50 pins and medals to be handed out to 50 individuals who had been nominated for their service to their towns, communities, and neighborhoods in the southeast.
The auditorium at the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum in Steinbach was packed with nearly 250 guests last Wednesday night.
RM of Stuartburn grew, survived and remains optimistic
The biggest highlight of 2022 for the new Reeve for the RM of Stuartburn is first off, the October municipal elections.
Michelle Gawronsky says, “given that honor was a huge highlight for my life. After that, I'm glad that the folks of Stuartburn are able to celebrate events live again. We had the best Canada Day celebrations in Vita and to be able to see people, actually coming into town and enjoying and watching our community come back to life has just been huge for us.”
RM of Piney residents personalize Christmas Hampers
Nearly 50 Christmas hampers filled with food and gifts for families in need will be delivered this week across the RM of Piney.
John Prevost, with the Piney Regional Chamber of Commerce as well as a volunteer for the past 3 years says, there are 47 hampers in total. “21 of those are going to families with several children and 26 of those are going to either individuals or couples.”
Tribute to a larger-than-life Mennonite farm boy from Grunthal
Ernest Braun, a local Mennonite Historian and close friend of Jack Thiessen, shared his thoughts and the legacy that was this larger-than-life man from Grunthal, and attempts to answer the question, "Who was Jack Thiessen?"
Jack Thiessen was born on April 14, 1931 and passed away on October 9, 2022.
Jack Thiessen was a Mennonite farm boy.
