Enrollment surge and legacy honoured at Steinbach Christian’s 75-year celebration

Steinbach Christian School is celebrating 75 years of providing Christ-centred education, a milestone that has brought generations of alumni, staff, students and community members together to reflect on the school's growth and enduring values.

What began in 1949 as a small educational institution tied closely to Steinbach Bible College has since expanded to nearly 500 students and 48 staff members, with grades now ranging from kindergarten to Grade 12.

Warm weather will wake Manitoba’s mosquitos and raise disease risk

Once temperatures and moisture levels line up, the province's most infamous summer pest will return in full force.

Dr. Bryan Cassone, a biology professor at Brandon University, says it’s remarkable how resilient mosquitoes are in surviving Manitoba winters.

"They're hardy," says Cassone. "They over-winter as either eggs or really early larvae stages depending on the species, and they're able to survive until conditions become favourable."

Dry weather fuels wildfire danger; residents warned to be ready to evacuate

While wildfires in eastern Manitoba remain out of control, officials say progress on suppression efforts has allowed limited access to resume in parts of Whiteshell Provincial Park.

As of 9 a.m. Sunday, permanent residents, cottagers, commercial operators and daytime visitors are permitted to return to the Pointe du Bois area, including Provincial Road (PR) 313. However, Manitoba Parks warns the wildfire risk remains high and conditions could change quickly.

‘Overwhelmed by support’: Steinbach fundraiser brings hope to Tasha Wiese

A fundraiser held at MJ’s Kafe in Steinbach raised $20,000 to support Tasha Wiese, a local daycare worker who lost both hands and her legs above the knees due to severe health complications.

Wiese was hospitalized on March 10 with severe pneumonia, invasive Group A Streptococcus, and septic shock, which led to the amputations.
