Truck driver in deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash granted day parole
The Parole Board of Canada has granted the trucker who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash day parole for six months.
Following an emotional, seven-hour hearing at Bowden Institution on Wednesday, the two-member board panel said Jaskirat Singh Sidhu will get full parole after those six months if he follows all conditions, including no contact with the families of the victims.
Sidhu was sentenced to eight years after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving charges for the 2018 crash that killed 16 and injured 13.

The Canada Border Services Agency recommended in March that Jaskirat Singh Sidhu be handed over to the Immigration and Refugee Board to decide if he should be deported back to India.

"It's not science fiction. It's science and this thing exists," said Alejandro Ramirez-Serrano at the unmanned vehicles robotarium lab at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary.
The robot is a man's height with a space-age helmet for a head, working arms and legs, and interchangeable hands. It looks like a cross between RoboCop and a Transformer.
Number of Canadian blood donors plummets to lowest point in a decade during COVID-19
Canadian Blood Services says it is struggling to replenish a critically low national supply caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The organization says the virus that has persisted since March 2020 has resulted in the smallest donor base in a decade.
"The number of people across Canada who donate regularly has decreased by 31,000 donors since the start of the pandemic, which has put a strain on the existing donor community," said Rick Prinzen, chief supply chain officer and vice-president of donor relations for Canadian Blood Services.

Five-year-old Frank Young was last seen 28 days ago at a playground on Red Earth Cree Nation in northern Saskatchewan.
"He's got a little chipmunk voice, and that's what (our family) is known for," Whitecap said Monday at a news conference in Prince Albert, Sask. "So we're the chipmunk family."
RCMP have said there's no evidence to suggest the boy was abducted. Last week, boat crews and a helicopter were used to focus the search on the Carrot River.

The manager for a Saskatchewan city planning a multi-purpose building in remembrance of a deadly junior hockey bus crash four years ago says plans are moving more slowly than had been hoped.
The City of Humboldt announced plans a year ago to build a tribute centre, including a gallery honouring the 16 people killed and 13 injured in the April 6, 2018, collision with a transport truck.
The $35-million price tag also includes an arena, a fitness and physiotherapy area, and a permanent memorial at the site of the crash north of Tisdale, Sask.
