There is no shortage of musical gifts being presented this time of the year.
On the cusp of turning 102, the 50-member Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir has a decades-long tradition of celebrating the season.
“For me... This is the kick-off to the holidays (and) the celebrations,” says longtime chorister and past WPC Board President Glynis Corkal.
The first concert in the 2023/24 season – subtitled “Let the Trumpets Sound!” – features a number of special guest artists, including the Winnipeg Brass Quintet, organist Wes Elias, plus younger choristers from the Grant Park and Riverview Trebles.
“It’s quite a longstanding tradition of the Phil to invite a children’s choir,” says maestro Yuri Klaz, who is set to lead his 24th “Christmas with the Phil” concert on Sunday.
Of course, plenty of festive favourites and an audience sing-along “Hallelujah Chorus” are on the program.
Adult tickets are $40, with senior and under 30 special ticket prices available.
As it is the first concert for the Phil this concert year, season passes are also available and provide price breaks for attendees.
“We really hope folks can take advantage of (those savings), starting this weekend,” says Phil Manager Vijay Chalasani, reminding that season passes make an ideal stocking stuffer.
With two performances, a matinee at 3 p.m. and an evening performance at 7 p.m., “Christmas with the Phil: Let the Trumpets Sound!” is sure to leave audiences feeling merry and bright.
Sunday, December 17 at the Crescent Arts Centre (Crescent Fort Rouge United Church).
