The Manitoba Choral Association has partnered with Musica Singers to host a workshop with a celebrated choir during a stop in town.
Founded in 1963 and based out of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, the award-winning Philippine Madrigal Singers – or “Madz” as they are often called – are the first two-time winners of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing and have been recognized by UNESCO as Artists of Peace.
“(Madz) has toured extensively throughout the world,” says Oscar Pantaleon, music director of Musica Singers.
He also happens to be an alumus of the group, singing with the ensemble from 1987 to 1996.
Known for their engaging performances and diverse repertoire, the choir typically performs seated in a semi-circle, unconducted with members of alternating sections beside one another.
Currently directed by Mark Anthony A. Carpio, the Manitoba Choral Association was approached by the group and was asked if there might be any interest in a workshop with the singers and their conductor.
“We thought immediately of partnering with Musica Singers,” says MCA Executive Director Jenny Steinke-Magnus, who agreed to co-host the event.
Started in 2019, members of the Musica Singers come from the large Filipino community in Winnipeg and promote Philippine art, culture, and traditions in performances throughout the province.
“(The local community) is so excited for this workshop,” says Pantaleon. He notes that it is a unique opportunity to not only hear the Madrigal Singers live but also to sing alongside the group. “(The community) is really excited and looking forward to that.”
Taking place at Maples Collegiate on Tuesday, May 7, the workshop is open to singers of all ages. Attendees can expect to learn a song or two, participate in sectional work and be treated to a performance by the Madz.
The workshop is also part of the Winnipeg Arts Council’s “City of Song” initiative, which endeavors to include elements of choral music in programming throughout the 2024 year, coinciding with Winnipeg 150.
“(City of Song) really encourages Winnipeggers, and people outside of Winnipeg, to come in and engage in group singing,” says Steinke-Magnus. “This is going to be an event with a large, large group!”
Registration is $20 for individual singers, with group rates for choirs available.
