For over 75 years, the River City Sound A Capella Chorus has been harmonizing and building community through music. Though, it hasn’t always been under that moniker.
“Previously, we were known as the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen,” says Les Creek, choir member and VP Music and Performance with the group.
In 2018, coinciding with the name change, the group was opened to women and has since blossomed into a group of roughly 40 singers.
“It’s been a wonderful, wonderful experience,” says Creek. “It’s really changed our sound. We are growing and we have such excellent results from the change.”
Meeting once a week, the auditioned chorus is open to the public and sings in a barbershop style. They have also periodically presented "Learn to Sing (Better)” programming, encouraging further growth in their membership.
Repertoire is wide ranging, from early barbershop tunes to modern classics, with an emphasis on music many of the choristers know well.
“We realized we had to appeal to the people we wanted to sing to,” says Creek. “So many of our newer members have come up and said ‘I love what we’re singing. I love the music!’”
In their upcoming concert, River City Sound presents Top 40 Hits, including tunes by The Proclaimers, Ed Sheeran, John Lennon, Elvis Presley and more.
Proceeds from the concert go toward supporting Willow Place – which provides inclusive, no-cost family violence prevention services, 24-hours, every day of the year.
The concert takes place at Prairie Spirit Church (207 Thompson Drive) on Saturday, May 11 at 2:30 p.m.
