New wayfinding signage in residential and commercial areas will soon be available to direct people to the City’s trail system, thanks to a recently received federal contribution.
The $100,000 investment is supported by $60,000 in contribution funding from the Active Transportation Fund, a $400 million national infrastructure investment to make travel by active transportation easier, safer, more convenient and more enjoyable. The City of Grande Prairie earmarked $40,000 in the 2024 Budget as part of the Transportation capital project.
“As communities in Alberta continue to grow, it is vital to have active and rural public transportation infrastructure that meets their evolving needs,” said the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “Our government’s investment will encourage Albertans to be active and healthy and contribute to a cleaner environment, creating more resilient and stronger communities for everyone.”
The additional wayfinding signage encourages residents and visitors to explore the over 100 kilometres of asphalt, gravel and natural trails though various recreational activities. The additional signage directing residents to these trails supports a strong quality of life through active lifestyles and community safety.
"By making it easier to find community trails we believe we'll see more residents and visitors using the trail system to enhance their lifestyles through recreational activities, a stronger sense of connection with nature and overall well-being,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “We’re grateful to the Government of Canada for supporting this project that will encourage everyone to walk or ride our trails."
The project is planned to take place July 2024.
