The Grande Prairie RCMP will soon welcome the first two police officers assigned by the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS), marking a significant step in the city’s transition towards its own municipal police service. While this transition unfolds, the Alberta RCMP remains the primary police authority.
Starting the week of July 8, two constables will join the existing frontline teams at the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment, working alongside RCMP members. Superintendent Lee Brachmann emphasized the shared dedication to citizen safety, noting the close collaboration with GPPS and the Government of Alberta to ensure a smooth transition and continued high-quality policing.
Chief of Police Dwayne Lakusta highlighted the partnership between GPPS and RCMP, underscoring the shared commitment to public safety and the seamless integration of the new officers. The first Experienced Officer class will begin work immediately, with additional officers stationed at the regional ALERT office and the Grande Prairie Police Service Transition Team.
GPPS officers have undergone extra training to align with RCMP policies and procedures, ensuring a consistent approach to policing. Citizens are reminded that the emergency response process remains the same, regardless of whether an officer is in an RCMP or GPPS uniform.
