Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective is preparing for a busy week of performances and parties.

Both brews and bocce are on tap for the nimble and spunky musical arts organization as they prepare for the return of a favourite event as well as their annual fundraiser.

Opera and more back on tap

“We always love Opera by the Pint,” says Flipside Artistic Director and co-founder Judith Oatway, who serves as host of the event.

After a bit of a summer hiatus, the casual evening of performances returns to Little Brown Jug at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14.

Seven singers are lined up to perform (outdoors or in, weather dependent!) at the brewery, accompanied by pianist Deena Grier. Songs and libations (beers, ciders, and non-alcoholic options) are sure to challenge and please palates of all sorts.

“This group is really adept at both opera and musical theatre,” says Oatway, who is excited for some new faces to perform in the program.

For past-performer Alice Macgregor, the event provides a low-stress opportunity to perform.

“It’s really fun," she says. “It’s a really nice atmosphere, you don’t feel pressured.”

Tossing off high C's and bocce balls

Though (likely) not singing on Wednesday, Macgregor will be one of the featured performers in the weekend’s next event: Every-bocce loves opera!

The annual Flipside fundraiser returns for its third instalment, featuring an afternoon of opera with a side of bocce ball.

“It’s a very casual, fun time,” says Flipside General Manager Lisa Rumpel. Though notes that a little bit of competition is not unheard of.

“So far, there are five or six teams and my husband is on one of them and he’s extremely competitive,” she says with a laugh.

Registration for the two-person teams is open until Thursday, August 15 ($30/player) with support tickets also available for those who would rather be spectators.

Alongside Macgregor, fellow soprano Sofia Escamilla will perform, plus contralto Joanna Loepp-Thiessen, tenor Nolan Kehler, all joined by pianist Deena Grier.

Attendees can expect refreshments from Little Brown Jug Brewing Co and Fête Ice Cream, plus an amazing raffle featuring prizes from many local businesses and arts organizations.

“This has turned into our main fundraiser for the year,” explains Oatway. “(Proceeds) go toward our performances throughout the year.”
