Chestermere's Country Fair is coming up next month, with one of the many attractions being a race between zucchinis.
Back in May, the Chestermere Public Library was giving away zucchini-growing kits for kids, who were encouraged to grow these plants for the fair, which comes to the city on September 7.
"Our zucchini growing kits are also a separate category in the red ribbon competition for kids," said Spencer McDonald, marketing and social media coordinator with the library. "You bring the entire plant, and you have a journal you fill out as you're growing your plant about the progress and what you've learned."
Racers can also purchase a zucchini from a farmers' market or a grocery store before placing it on wheels and axles, which are also provided by the library.
"We've seen people decorate them, paint them, and put little spoilers on them. Whatever you do with your zucchini, you can decorate them however you want. You just can't put springs on them."
All the racers start at a standstill at a starting point, and whatever car makes it down the decline the fastest wins. The zucchini car-building kit also features rules, specifications, building guides, and instructions on how to build the vehicle.
The Chestermere Country Fair also features a harvest market, parade, rodeo, and even a pancake breakfast.
