This past weekend Chestermere Lake was transformed into a yacht lovers' dream.
Stepehn Reichenfeld, past commodore at the Calgary Yacht Club says the 2024 Alberta Sailing Provincials were held in the city and welcomed sailors from across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.
"It's a combination of the competitive sailing season in Alberta. it also counts as a double points regatta in the Alberta series."
There are four regattas in the provincial series. To score in the competition you have to have participated in three of the other four events plus the finals which are a double points regatta.
According to Reichenfeld, the club tries to emphasize the importance of community.
"The youngest competitor was about nine or maybe ten. And the oldest competitor was probably 71."
Reichenfeld mentions that sailing is a volunteer-driven sport.
"All the on-water stuff is done by volunteers, and it takes a tremendous effort to pull off the regattas because we're subject to the variance of the weather."
