The City of Calgary provided an additional update on Tuesday (Sept 3.) on the work on the Bearspaw South Feeder Water Main.

Repairs are scheduled to be finished by September 23 and excavation at 11 repair sites has been completed.

According to the city, concrete pouring has also started at additional repair segments.

Calgary is currently under Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and staff with the city are asking residents from Strathmore, and Chestermere to conserve water.

In an interview with StrathmoreNow, Mayor Pat Fule says the town gets its water supply from Calgary through theĀ East Calgary Regional Waterline.

Fule says that in the mid-2000s, a previous council made a deal to bring water in from Calgary.

"At one time we did have a water reservoir and a water treatment plant, but it was a struggle to keep up with the increasing population that was happening with Strathmore."

Fule added that Calgary's water restrictions have greatly impacted Strathmore.

"This is a legitimate issue. The water line was supposed to last much longer than it is. That was done in the mid to late 70s," mentions Fule. "It was supposed to last close to 100 years and it has not."

Strathmore's mayor urged residents to stick with restrictions to take the stress off of the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant in Calgary.

Ways to conserve water:

  • Keep showers to three minutes or less.
  • Run full loads of laundry and dishwashers.
  • Flush your toilet only when you need to.

According to the city, bylaw officers are working to follow up on complaints and will hand out $3,000 fines for businesses or houses that aren't following water rules.

City staff say five tickets were given out this past weekend for outdoor watering.
