Hundreds of fans flocked to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday (Sept. 4) for a candlelight vigil for Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.

The two brothers were killed by a suspected drunk driver last week while they were out for a bike ride.

Johnny played nine seasons with the Flames before signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Members of the Flames organization past and present were on hand to talk about their relationship with Johnny.

Flames legend Lanny McDonald says, "Johnny and Matthew are leaving a legacy greater than they could have ever imagined."

Forward Mikael Backlund choked back tears during the vigil.

"My thoughts go out to the whole Gaudreau family. Rest in peace, Johnny and Matthew. Hope you're having your pasta just the way you like it up there."

Flames GM Craig Conroy also spoke at the vigil, "Following their deaths, it took a couple of days for me to compose myself before I could attempt to show my love for Johnny and the Gaudreau family."

Bagpipes performed a rendition of the song "Amazing Grace" followed by about 13 minutes of silence during the candlelight vigil.

The event was capped off by a recorded song for Johnny performed by country artist George Canyon.

According to staff with the Calgary Flames, the vigil will be day one of a 13-day observance for fans to visit the memorial outside of the Saddledome to pay their respects to Johnny and Matthew.

A special memorial service for the brothers will be held on Monday (Sept. 9) for close family and friends.

The event will start at 10 a.m. and live streamed here for fans who wish to pay their respects.
