As kids get back into the grove of a new school year, the Town of Strathmore is reminding drivers to be cautious around school buses.

Tips to keep kids safe:

  • When amber lights are flashing, slow down as the bus is preparing to stop.
  • If the red lights of a bus are flashing, make sure to wait while they are stopped. Only go ahead when the red lights have stopped flashing.
  • Watch for children getting on and off buses, as they may cross the road unexpectedly.

According to Alberta Health Services, children should walk, not run to the bus, and try to get there at least five minutes before it comes.

As well, AHS is asking parents to walk to the bus stop with their kids until they know how to get to the area safely.

A release says that kids shouldn't be using a phone or tablet when walking to or from a school bus.

Students at Golden Hills School Division started classes on Tuesday (Sept. 6) and kids from Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools were back in school on Wednesday (Aug. 28).
