The Strathmore Municipal Library is gearing up for the winter through its Visiting Library program.
The initiative provides library materials for people unable to visit the library due to illness or disability by delivering materials straight to their homes. People can borrow a variety of items, from books and magazines to audiobooks and DVDs.
"It's been going on for close to ten years now," said Lea Jensen, coordinator of Visiting Library. "We realized that sometimes people can't get to the library because of mobility problems, or they no longer can drive, and that's what inspired us to start this program."
The library delivers items to around 45 residents throughout the winter. Jensen added that they see an increase in the program during the colder months for those who don't feel safe braving the icy roads.
"Anybody can qualify for that if they have that need, and because sometimes these people can be shut in, it's nice to have a person come and visit and have that human contact."
Anyone looking to volunteer for the program can do so by visiting the library and picking up an application form. For people who would like to have their items delivered, they can contact the Visiting Library Services by calling 403-934-5440 or via email at visitinglibrary@strathmorelibrary.ca.
"One person said that Visiting Library lets them be a part of the world even though they can't be out in the world. I think that puts it in a nutshell, how people feel reading books and expanding their mind," mentioned Jensen.
The program is free for residents of Strathmore due to funding by Family and Community Support Services, and United Way of Calgary and Area.
