The Animal Care Centre of Strathmore has provided residents with tips to recognize pain in pets.
"Nobody knows your pet as well as you do," wrote the centre in a release. "Owners can sense when things aren’t right."
One sign of pain in a pet is changes in behaviour. Animals acting withdrawn and unusually aggressive are signs of pain, including if they begin to hide or act restless at night.
Limping, stiffness, and a reluctance to jump and play are also a sign of pain, as well as reduced appetite and weight loss.
Animals will also be vocal if they're in pain through whining, whimpering, and growling. Cats can also express pain through purring.
Grooming changes, such as persistent licking or not grooming altogether is also a sign of pain in an animal.
"Our pets rely on us to look out for their well-being," added the centre. "Let’s give them the love and care they deserve, especially in their older years.
If you believe your pet is feeling pain, or if they display any of these behaviours, reach out to your local veterinarian.
