Great Plains College has announced that more than $213,000 in scholarships, bursaries, and awards have been distributed to 130 students this fall, providing a boost to those pursuing higher education.

"We understand that the financial burden can be a significant barrier for students," said Brad Mahon, president and CEO of Great Plains College. "Our scholarship program is designed to help alleviate some of that pressure and provide a clear pathway to education that might not have been otherwise accessible. Since the program’s inception, we’ve proudly awarded nearly $2.5 million in scholarships and bursaries, supporting thousands of students in their academic journeys."

Fall Scholarship Highlights:

  • Swift Current Campus: Over $157,000 awarded to local students.
  • Maple Creek, Martensville, Kindersley, and Warman Campuses: A combined total of more than $55,250 in scholarships.
  • International Student Awards: $10,000 distributed to second-year diploma students at Swift Current and Warman campuses.
  • Adult Basic Education Awards: Ten Persistence Awards will be presented throughout December in Kindersley, Martensville, Maple Creek, and Swift Current, including two Living Sky Casino Indigenous Adult Basic Education awards.
  • Winter Scholarships: An additional $51,000 in scholarships will be awarded in the winter semester to an estimated 43 students.

The 2024-25 academic year also marks the introduction of two new bursaries:

  • Crown Investment Corporation (CIC) Indigenous Bursary: Five annual awards of $5,000 each to support Indigenous students.
  • Philip Gobeil Memorial Bursary: Created from a $100,000 donation by the Gobeil family, this bursary will offer five $2,000 awards annually for the next decade.

"Our scholarship program is among the strongest in the province, thanks to the continued generosity of our community donors," added Mahon. "With National Philanthropy Day approaching on November 15, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all our supporters who make these opportunities possible for our students."

Applications for the 2024-25 academic year are now open. Students applying to eligible full-time programs before April 30, 2025, are automatically considered for Entrance Scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000.
