Safe Communities Humboldt, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Safety Council, is holding a Mature Drivers Refresher Course on Monday, December 4 at the Humboldt Uniplex. The free course offers drivers aged 55 and over the opportunity to brush up on skills critical to driving in both urban and rural settings.

It’s a positive, open class environment for learning with no examinations and no impact on the status of drivers’ licenses. It’s designed to reinforce safe driving habits and increase drivers’ confidence when navigating Saskatchewan’s increasing city, town, and highway traffic. It provides insight into how to adapt driving habits based on the physical changes the body goes through as it matures.

The desired outcome is to see safer roadways with fewer collisions and potential for trauma, explains Amanda Wood, community relations coordinator with the Saskatchewan Safety Council.

“It’s about using best practices and having more confidence when navigating the increasing traffic in Saskatchewan’s town, cities and roadways.”

Wood says the topics are varied. They include:

  • Normal driving situations such as intersections, following distance, and maintaining an open “gate” around your vehicle

  • Hazardous driving environments such as skids, head-on collisions, hydroplaning, and how to protect yourself while driving

  • Traffic guidance such as sign recognition and pavement markings

  • Review of safety devices such as seat belts and airbags

  • Medication awareness, vision, and effective use of your eyes.

Those wishing to take the course must register at www.sasksafety.org or by calling the Council toll free at (855) 280-7115. The program runs from 9 am to noon and from 1 pm to 4 pm.
