The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Saints Volleyball Team capped off their season with a thrilling victory, sweeping their opponents 3-0 sets in the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference tier 2 championship game. The win was not just a celebration of athletic excellence but also marked the end of an era for four key players: Grace Moar, Mackenzie Nicoll, Loewen Hunter, and Brooke Fox, who are set to graduate this year.
Head coach Braden Schrader praised his team for their impressive performance, noting how the girls were able to overcome minor mistakes to secure the win.
"It was the best game we've seen all season. The girls really stepped up, and it was exciting to watch them bring home the championship."
For the graduating seniors, the victory was a culmination of years of hard work, camaraderie, and growth. Grace Moar, a Grade 12 student, reflected on the significance of the win.
"It was amazing, especially growing up with these girls. To be able to bring home a banner as a senior is such a fulfilling feeling. Playing with these girls, like Loewen, Mackenzie, Brooke, and even my sister Renee, has been an unforgettable experience."
Mackenzie Nicoll echoed Moar's sentiments, highlighting the support within the team.
"The girls are all very welcoming, and they always cheer you up if you're down. It really helps with your confidence. I'm going to miss the atmosphere and just being with them."
For Brooke Fox, the championship was a fitting end to her high school volleyball career.
"Leaving PCI with a banner feels like the happy ending of a book. It's so fulfilling for the whole team, but especially for the seniors."
Loewen Hunter, who has been with the team since Grade 10, shared her gratitude for the opportunity to play and grow with the team.
"I'm so happy it ended this way. I couldn't imagine a better way to wrap up my volleyball career. It’s going to be sad not playing anymore, but I'm thankful for all the experiences."
While the team will be losing four key seniors, they are optimistic about the future. Coach Schrader is already looking ahead to next season, where a strong group of Grade 10s and promising Grade 9 athletes are set to step up.
Renee Moar, a Grade 10 student and younger sister to Grace, shared her excitement about the future.
"It’s been great playing with my sister and the other seniors. I’ll definitely miss them, but I’m looking forward to next season."
As the PCI Saints celebrate their championship victory, the seniors leave behind a legacy of leadership, teamwork, and dedication—traits that coach Schrader hopes will continue to inspire future generations of athletes at PCI.
