The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has cleared an RCMP officer and an Alberta Health Services peace officer of any wrongdoing surrounding the death of a 72-year-old man they were dealing with at the Sundre Hospital in September of 2022.

On September 23, 2022, the man was admitted to the Sundre Hospital for a mental health assessment.

The man attempted to leave the hospital when he was confronted by officers.

The individual became aggressive and started to pull on one of the officer's duty belts.

The officer delivered knee strikes to gain compliance and deployed his OC spray in the man's face.

The man was handcuffed but went into medical distress and ultimately died.

In their report, investigators were unable to determine a cause of death.

ASIRT ruled that the officers acted lawfully in the execution of their duties and there is no evidence that a criminal offence was committed.
