There were no new names put forward for the positions of mayor and city council in Assiniboia's municipal election this year, leading to the election by acclamation of all seven incumbents for the small town’s (pop. 2,300) council.
Acclaimed for another four years were mayor Sharon Schauenberg, and councilors Renaud Bissonnette, Reneé Clermont, Robert Ellert, Patrick Grondin, Graham Harvey, and Kris Olson.
“I’m looking forward to the next four years,” Shauenberg told Discover Moose Jaw. “It’s just an honour and a privilege to do this job, so I’m happy about it.
“We had some plans in motion from our last council, of course, the last four years we’ve been working on a lot of different projects.”
Schauenberg said she and her council were looking forward to the summer 2025 resurfacing of Highways #2 and #13, in partnership with the provincial government. The project will rehabilitate the pavement, sidewalks, and related infrastructure on Centre St. in Assiniboia.
Another continued focus for Assiniboia will be their water infrastructure, which she they chip away at every year.
“Just the amount of infrastructure that we’ve worked on, we’ve done a lot of sewers, water lines, valves, hydrants, lots of pavement, a lot of concrete. We’ve done that every year,” Schauenberg explained. We’ve put in probably over $3 million. We have had our new CEO in office for the past three years, and he’s very open-door policy, team-oriented, which is great, and we’ve got a great relationship with local and provincial government and developing our relationships with RM and towns.
“I can’t thank the team we have at the Town of Assiniboia enough for what we’ve accomplished.”
Schauenberg said the town’s new rink, the recently completed $20 million Southland Co-op Centre, has been a huge success since it opened. They’ve enjoyed having the Moose Jaw Warriors visit for games and hosting local tournaments, and the community has been making use of the facility’s climbing wall, VR room, and teen centre.
“We’ve just got such a beautiful facility and if anybody hasn’t checked it out, please come down,” she added.
The council meets to be sworn in on Tuesday the 19th, after which they will pick up with budget deliberations heading into the new year.
