This Sunday night, February 2nd at 7pm at the Fort Garry Hotel. Jazz Winnipeg will be presenting Faux Pas Funk.

Described as a party band to the core. Faux Pas Funk was founded in 2014. It mixes Funk, Jazz, and world music together to create a rhythmic and sound tapestry where the musicians of the band can open things up foy improvisation.

Faux Paas Funk has performed many events including international festivals, underground showcases, and break-dancing competitions.

Sunday’s show at the Fort Garry Hotel is sure to be loads of fun, and a fantastic way to welcome in the month of February here in the city.

The Band was founded by Winnipeg saxophonist Niall Cade.

When Cade formed the band, he had a few goals in mind. As he explains, “I was coming out of university. I graduated from the music program at U of M in 2013. Throughout that whole time, I was working with a variety of bands. A lot of Motown...in a band called Retro Rhythm Revue...playing that music was such a great learning experience for me to dig into Motown, Funk, R&B music...that whole genre. I really fell in love with all that music. At the same time exploring tenor saxophone and jazz fusion has always been interesting. I have always been inspired by people like Chris Potter, Michael Brecker, Bob Mincer...who have always maintained that kind of electro-fusion jazz mix. So Faux Pas Funk was my way of creating an ensemble that allowed me to do something like that. An approximation...it gave me a freedom of genre to dabble in any kind of compositional whims that came to my mind.”

From these ideas Cade put together a band of musicians who he really enjoyed collaborating with. Fux Pas Funk was on hiatus for a few years, and there have been some changes in personnel, but the lineup for Sunday night will consist of some of the finest jazz musicians in the city.

The band consists of Emmanuel Bach on guitar, Carter Graham on keyboards, Kevin Waters on drums, Karl Kohut on bass, and finally Niall Cade on Saxophone

Cade describes the music for Sunday’s show leaning toward the sound of Weather Report. All the music will be new. There will be the odd cover, but the arrangements and feel of those covers will be completely different and new. “It's all original, all new music. When I moved back to Winnipeg from New York in 2021...I started the project back up thinking it might be a good thing to revive. As I booked some gigs and the project was revived...I just started wanting to write for it. So now we have almost a whole new album’s worth of material that we will be able to present on Sunday.”

Sunday night’s show with Faux Pas Funk is sure to be excellent. A fabulous way to hear some new music performed by some of the best musicians in the city.

Faux Pas Funk perform this Sunday, February 2nd at 7pm at the Fort Garry Hotel.
