This June, Prairie Theatre Exchange is flipping the script on what musical theatre can be.
The Remix, a bold new collaboration between PTE and RISE Musical Theatre Company, hits the stage on Saturday, June 28, bringing together 10 choreographers, 10 vocalists and 70 dancers for a boundary-pushing celebration of hip hop, commercial dance, and theatrical storytelling. Audiences can catch the show at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Cherry Karpyshin Theatre, located inside PTE’s downtown Winnipeg venue.
A creative collision of worlds, The Remix is the brainchild of RISE founder Joseph Sevillo (Ma-Buhay!) and Artistic Associate Dutchess Cayetano. The show pairs local choreographers with vocalists and dancers to create ten unique, high-energy numbers that fuse movement, music and narrative in new and exciting ways.
“RISE wanted to provide a bridge between hip hop and theatre – and so The Remix was born,” said PTE Artistic Director Ann Hodges. “It’s a chance for Winnipeg’s vibrant hip hop community to dip their toes into theatrical storytelling, and a chance for Prairie Theatre Exchange to welcome over 70 fantastic hip hop dancers and choreographers to our stage. It’s going to be incredible!”
The choreographers—Angel & Adelie Advincula, Lee Banaga, Sharlyne Chua, Victoria Exconde, Dammecia Hall, Orielle Marcus, Katrina McQuade, Maria Rawluk, Stephanie Rutherford, and Wayne Santos—represent some of Winnipeg’s top talent in hip hop and commercial dance. Each will lead a team of dancers and collaborate with a vocalist to create original pieces for the show.
Since becoming PTE’s Education Company in Residence in 2021, RISE has offered free musical theatre training intensives to local artists, with a focus on IBPOC youth and emerging artists. The Remix is a natural extension of this mission—making space for more artists, more stories, and more ways to move.
With its electric fusion of styles, The Remix isn’t just a showcase—it’s a celebration of Winnipeg’s creative pulse and the power of collaboration. Whether you’re a theatre buff, dance enthusiast, or just love a good beat, this is your chance to see something truly original. Mark June 28 on your calendar, grab your tickets early, and get ready for a show that promises to shake up the stage—and maybe even redefine what musical theatre can be.
Tickets for The Remix are $45 for adults, with a $10 early bird discount for the first 100 tickets sold for each show. A special $20 ticket is available for children 12 and under at the matinee.
