Michael Blais Appointed Executive Director of Manitoba Opera, Effective August 1
Manitoba Opera is turning the page to a new chapter of leadership with the appointment of Michael Blais as its next Executive Director, effective August 1, 2025.
Currently serving as the company’s Director of Operations, Blais has been part of Manitoba Opera’s administrative team since 2010 and brings more than 25 years of experience in the performing arts sector to the role. His promotion marks a key step in the company’s ongoing leadership transition following longtime General Director & CEO Larry Desrochers’s decision not to seek renewal of his contract, which ends in May 2026.
“The board of trustees and I are thrilled that Michael has accepted the appointment,” said Board Chair Lori Yorke. “He brings a wealth of knowledge, a deep connection to the company, and a strong track record of leadership.”
The position of executive director is one of two newly created roles—alongside that of artistic director—resulting from a strategic leadership review initiated in light of Desrochers’s planned departure. Over the coming year, Blais and Desrochers will work closely to ensure a smooth handover, solidify the new leadership structure, and help the company adapt to an evolving arts landscape.
“As we begin the search for a new artistic director—someone who can build on the company’s artistic vision and deepen its connection with the community—we are also continuing the work of transition,” Yorke added. “This is a significant moment in Manitoba Opera’s evolution.”
For Blais, who has grown professionally alongside the company, the new role represents both an honour and a responsibility.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with our community, board, staff, patrons, donors, and funders to support the great work our artists and company do,” said Blais. “I’m honoured to continue serving Manitoba Opera in this new capacity and excited to help lead the company into its next chapter.”
As executive director, Blais will report to the board of trustees and partner with the incoming artistic director to provide strategic leadership across all areas of the organization—from fundraising and financial management to marketing, education, community engagement, and operations. He will also play a key role in advancing Manitoba Opera’s priorities and championing programming that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the community it serves.
General Director & CEO Larry Desrochers expressed full confidence in Blais’s appointment. “Michael is an excellent choice,” he said. “His deep knowledge of the organization, unwavering commitment to the arts, and proven leadership make him uniquely qualified for the role.”
Desrochers, who has led Manitoba Opera since 2000, will remain with the company as interim artistic director beginning August 8, continuing to support the organization through the transition until the end of his contract in May 2026.
