Rocky View Schools (RVS) expects its student population to grow by nearly 500 this school year, according to preliminary numbers.

New superintendent Ryan Reed told trustees on Sept. 4 that 29,617 students were enrolled as of Sept. 3. The number is expected to rise to about 29,730 by the end of the month, up from 29,243 on Sept. 30, 2024.

He said enrolment in its Cochrane schools is currently down slightly compared with last year, but could change in the coming weeks.

He stressed these are only preliminary numbers. The official count will be finalized Sept. 30, as required by the province. Throughout the year, those numbers typically fluctuate as students enter and leave schools.

In January 2025, RVS submitted its projected enrolment of 29,730 students to the government.

The enrolment numbers submitted to the province directly impact the allocation of resources, such as funding, teachers, and educational staff.
