Manitobans are invited to join the Canadian Bible Society to explore the intersection of faith and mental health.
Candace Maxymowich, Bible Store Manager with the Canadian Bible Society Winnipeg Bookstore, says, "A Gathering of Hope is an evening designed to create a safe, supportive space where people can explore the intersection of faith and mental health."
The evening is open to anyone aged 18 and older. "It's intended for adults 18 and older, whether they're maybe navigating their own mental health journey, supporting someone else, or simply interested in exploring how faith and mental wellness connect," Maxymowich says.
During the evening, participants will get to hear from multiple professionals who are all Christian. "We have three experienced therapists joining us as panelists that all come from very different walks of life. But one thing that they have in common is their faith as a Christian, and so they each bring a compassionate, faith-based perspective on mental wellness."
Ahead of time, participants are encouraged to submit questions that will be answered by the panelists. "When people sign up online, they can submit a question they'd like answered, and all questions are anonymous. I think it's a really great way to ask questions without fear of judgment or exposure."
For those who are a bit hesitant to attend, Maxymowich assures that you're not alone. "This event is all about sharing God's light in the midst of darkness. Whether maybe you're someone full of hope and faith or not, this is a place to feel supported without pressure, and we'd love to see you there."
Maxymowich says this is also a great way to offer hope to others. "We also want to encourage people to invite someone who might benefit from an evening like this, whether that's a friend, a family member, a colleague, or someone else that God places on your heart."
While the bookstore has hosted several events such as paint nights and trauma healing groups, A Gathering of Hope is something Maxymowich has been hoping for. "What some people might not know about me is that outside of my work with the Canadian Bible Society, I also work as a therapist. And so this event is something that has been on my heart for quite some time now. And so I'm really excited to be able to host this event at our bookstore."
A Gathering of Hope is free to attend; however, Maxymowich is asking participants to RSVP here. While registering, questions for the panelists can also be submitted anonymously.
The event is at the Canadian Bible Society Winnipeg Bookstore, 584 Pembina Highway, Unit #13/14 on Sept. 19. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. before it starts at 7 p.m.
