Hillcrest School students, staff, and families came together on Friday to honour the legacy of Terry Fox with their annual walk.

Principal Shannon Brown said the event was led by Constable Don DeChief and organized by their new first-year teacher, Ms. Henry. “We had about 127 participants, plus numerous families came and joined us,” she explained.

While most walked, some students added extra energy to the event. “There are always a few that like to run ahead, yes,” Brown said with a laugh.

She added that Hillcrest sees the Terry Fox Run as a chance to share important lessons. “Hillcrest likes to show the rest of the students that one person can make a difference, and together we can make an even bigger impact. We want to educate about cancer and hope that one day there will be a cure.”

The school is continuing its support of the Terry Fox Foundation with student-led fundraising. “Our student leadership will be doing some fundraising this month to make a donation towards the Terry Fox Foundation,” Brown said.

That includes a unique idea that has students excited. “They’re doing some pickle sales on Friday, selling some pickles to raise some more money,” she said. “It’s a dollar a pickle. Pickles are very popular among the youth, so we’ll see how much interest there is in it.”

Brown shared her pride in the way the school community stepped up to make the event a success. “I was really proud of our school and our first-year teacher for arranging everything, and of course, a huge thanks to EPS for helping us coordinate our walk.”
