Parks officials are warning hikers to be cautious after an aggressive moose was spotted on the Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail.
The alert is in effect from the Upper Lake Day Use area to the Point Campground, but does not include the campground itself. The warning also covers the Hidden Lake area.
Normally, moose are not aggressive, but a stressed animal, a bull in rut or a cow protecting a calf can attack. Rutting season runs from late September to late October, which means moose are often more active.
Officials say an agitated moose may show warning signs such as raised neck and back hairs, ears pinned back, snorting or lip licking.
If charged by a moose, people should run, find shelter behind a tree, car or building, and if knocked down, curl into a ball and protect their head.

Visitors are reminded to keep dogs under control and never harass or try to scare a moose. People should also avoid approaching calves, as protective mothers may be nearby.
Drivers travelling through forested areas are advised to stay alert for wildlife on or near the road.
