Monday night’s meeting of Weyburn City Council was a busy one. There were a number of motions that were tabled for various infrastructure projects, there was a presentation of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, and there was a bevy of reports presented for the council from the administration. It was quite the introduction to the job for Weyburn’s newest City Councillor, Larry Heggs.
Heggs was elected to the position in the by-election held on May 31st.
“A great opportunity to work with some excellent administration and great councillors,” Heggs told Discover Weyburn. “I’ve been involved in the scenario enough that it was nothing that I didn’t expect, but it was still good to get it under my belt, so to speak.”
While the meeting started with the presentation of the Jubilee Medals, the business of the council itself couldn’t get underway until Heggs was officially sworn in by the City of Weyburn’s legal council, Mike Weger. The swearing-in took place immediately after the medal presentations, and Heggs says it wasn’t nerve-wracking in the slightest.
“It’s something, again, I’ve looked forward to, and I genuinely look forward to serving the people of Weyburn and the public,” Heggs said. “That’s what I genuinely believe. That’s what I’m there for, so I want to make sure that they know I’m serious about it, so I really had no issue with it.”
Heggs also had no problem jumping right into the role.
“I had gone to council as a citizen fairly regularly prior to that, so a lot of the stuff I was sort of, somewhat familiar with, and then, of course, we get a package before that to make ourselves more familiar on a few of the projects, like the road construction piece at 1st Avenue there,” Heggs said of one of the bigger items that was discussed at the meeting. “I was more than happy to make that motion.”
Heggs, along with the rest of Weyburn City Council, will be back in the chambers of City Hall on June 26th.
