A number of areas in the South West are experiencing another year of drought.
The Saskatchewan Cattlemens Association is holding a couple of Townhall Meetings this week in the area to discuss the drought and its overall impact.
SCA's CEO Grant McLellan talks about some of the ideas that came out of the meetings last week in Perdue and Kindersley.
He says there was a lot of good discussion about some of the challenges producers are facing, it was a good opportunity for producers to share their experience as they go through yet another year of drought in Saskatchewan.
McLellan says its a difficult conversation as producers (grain and livestock) are facing some difficult times.
He says there was lots of discussion around making sure we're working together.
"How can crop insurance help get grain producers a little bit of assurance quickly so that they can call their neighbors, livestock producers who need to get out there and bale or get some temporary fencing set up so they can do some grazing? It was really about streamlining that process. About some improvements to the forage rainfall program, as well as if they can incorporate some changes to that low yield threshold."
For instance, if a grain producer has a barley crop and its low yield is doubled to 14 bushels, but they run a 19-bushel crop can that be counted as a 5-bushel crop instead of 19 bushels so that the rest of it can be written off.
McLellan says it's important to hear directly from producers and get ideas on what can be done.
The SCA is holding a couple of Townhall Meetings this week Tuesday (August 1) in Cabri and Wednesday (August 2) in Cadillac.
The Town Hall Drought meetings run from 1:30 to 4:30 tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Cabri Community Hall, and Wednesday at the Cadillac Community Hall.
