Known for innovative and adventurous programming, Winnipeg’s Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective continues to engage audiences in unique ways with their annual fundraiser taking place this weekend.
“Every-bocce loves opera!” combines Italian opera and song with a bit of friendly bocce competition.
"It seems like a unique and fun way to get people out,” says Flipside’s general manager Lisa Rumpel.
In its second year, the event features performances by four lauded vocalists (Jessica Kos-Whicher, soprano, Meagan Reimer, mezzo soprano, Justin Odwak, tenor, Scott Braun, baritone) alongside pianist Deena Grier, alternating with rounds of friendly competition.
“It’ll sort of be like a lasagna of bocce and song,” says Judith Oatway, founder and artistic director of the company.
Bocce is like lawn bowling — and, in a way, not dissimilar to curling, as Oatway points out —accessible to players of all ages and abilities. No previous experience is required.
“It’s a pretty chill and relaxed sport,” says Oatway. “The competition level... isn’t (expected to be) super high.”
Teams or individuals can register for $25 per person. For those who would rather watch the day's festivities, spectator tickets are available for $20 with children 12 and under free, though registration is required.
Funds raised go toward continuing Flipside’s mandate to bring “outside-the-box, inspiring musical experiences to Manitobans.”
“Every-bocce loves opera!” takes place at Riverview Community Centre on Sunday, August 20 beginning at 1 pm. For tickets and registration details, visit: www.flipsideopera.com
