We're being encouraged to take additional steps to encourage community members to protect their kidneys.

March is kidney awareness month, and everyone should learn more about protecting their ‘beans.’ Public awareness campaigns are being developed to inform people of the importance of early detection and screening. You may have noticed posters around your community encouraging everyone to self-screen for kidney disease.

Here are a few facts to share:

Legislation introduced to lower compulsory school age included in proposal

The Manitoba government has introduced legislation that would lower the age a child is required to attend school and remove barriers to students enrolling in schools in the area where they live. 

Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Nello Altomare made the announcement on Wednesday.

Education component key to youth fishing derby at Pelican Lake

The 1st Annual Healthy Lake Youth Derby, hosted by E & J Live Bait and Mound Wildlife, took place at Pelican Lake on Saturday, March 9th, with 262 youth between the ages of 3 and 14 registered for the event.

Healthy Lake committee treasurer, Charlotte McConnell says they were very pleased with the second half of this year's set of derbies.  "It was really good, and I would call it a great success!  The weather was perfect, and everyone had a lot of fun!"

Manitoba RCMP raise awareness during Fraud Prevention Month

The Manitoba RCMP will be taking to social media throughout the month of March to mark Fraud Prevention Month. Fraud is one of the fastest growing crimes not just in Manitoba, but in Canada.

In 2023, Canadians lost $567 million dollars; in Manitoba that number was over $9 million dollars.

There are a number of different ways fraudsters work to obtain the information they are seeking from victims, which can result in a financial loss.

Communication through various mediums like WhatsApp, and Facebook, or unsolicited emails or text messages are the biggest culprits.

Pelican Lake Derby raises close to $10K for aeration project

The Pelican Lake Healthy Lake Committee hosted another successful ice fishing derby last weekend.

The annual derby is the signature event for the committee where funds raised go directly into the Pelican Lake aeration project.  Each year the ice fishing derby is held the first Saturday in March.

This year the committee had to make a few changes, the most significant was the launch of the Fish Donkey App, to register anglers and to record fish caught.

Joseph and Tania Hofer farm together with their community at Greenwald Colony Farms just north of Beausejour and could relate very well with the community farming that takes place on the other side of the world in the country of Nepal.

The Hofers participated in the most recent Learning Tour with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) to have a better understanding of the work that's being done in Nepal through the collaborative efforts between CFGB and their partner organizations.
