Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew tours wildfire zones by air as 21,000 remain out of homes

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew took to the air Thursday, touring and meeting with those dealing with scores of wildfires in his province, while in Saskatchewan thousands of fire evacuees were given the green light to go home.

“Just this morning, the premier was in Flin Flon meeting with the firefighters, the boots on the ground, including our American firefighters that are up there,” Natural Resources Minister Ian Bushie told a wildfire update news conference.

Manitoba school division to pause bringing back 'God Save the King' in classrooms

A Manitoba school division’s plan to bring "God Save the King" back to the classroom is on hold after the idea met with controversy.

The majority of trustees with the Mountain View School Division, which oversees 16 schools in and around Dauphin, Man., voted Monday night to pause the plan and see whether it is legally required and supported by area residents.

Trustee Scott Lynxleg, who is from the Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve, said he voted to get more information because he's heard from parents and staff that the change could affect Indigenous staff and students.

Backbencher out of Manitoba NDP caucus over Nygard link, accuses premier of bullying

Manitoba's governing New Democrats ousted backbencher and defence lawyer Mark Wasyliw from caucus Monday, and Wasyliw fired back by accusing Premier Wab Kinew of being a micromanaging, toxic bully.

The NDP said it removed Wasyliw because a partner at his law firm is representing convicted sex offender and disgraced fashion mogul Peter Nygard.

Manitoba NDP removes backbencher from caucus over Nygard link

A Manitoba New Democrat has been removed from the government caucus and is firing back at Premier Wab Kinew.

The NDP has removed Mark Wasyliw — a lawyer — from caucus, saying his business partner is a defence lawyer for convicted sex offender Peter Nygard.

Caucus chair Mike Moyes says Wasyliw has failed to demonstrate good judgment and does not align with caucus principles of respect and trust.

Wasyliw says he thinks he has been turfed because he spoke his mind within caucus.
